A workshop will also be held for the participants on singing the anthem within the correct time frame. The event precedes a nation-wide contest being organised by the project to identify talent in performing arts.

Winners of the same will get to sing the National Anthem with political leaders in an event that may be televised, he said.

An Easter eve musical proved to be a visual and spiritual treat

This Easter eve, the Lorraine Music Academy staged a musical, titled An Easter Tale, at Epicentre Auditorium, Gurgaon on 19 April. This musical evening is in aid of the Lamp Trust and the National Patriotic Project Come India Sing. IAS officer John Samuel, Chief Post Master General, and Manoj George, an Advocate in the Supreme Court were the guests of honour.

The story and significance of Good Friday and Easter were told through an interesting dialogue between mother Becca and her daughter Karen in the modern day India. Scenes from Jesus‘ life were enacted out and sung. These included the episode of Jesus healing the blind man, forgiving the adulterous woman, healing people and washing his disciples’ feet. The highlight was the enactment of The Last Supper, with all 12 disciples sitting at a table and eating with Jesus.  A total of 30 artists participated in the musical. The role of Jesus was played by Aubrey Aloysius, Judas by Andrew Packiam, Peter by Kaustav Sood, Mary Magdalene by Ananya Ravi. All the actors sang and acted beautifully. Bharatanatyam dance performers Monica and Heera depicted scenes from Jesus’ life through a graceful performance. Lorraine Fiona Aloysius sang a song titled “There’s something that’s different about him”, which described Jesus’ supernatural powers even while he was on earth. His voice actually calmed the stormy sea.  Many famous Easter favourites, including both old and new, were beautifully rendered. They included "The Old Rugged Cross", "Mary Did You Know", "The Stone Is Rolled Away" and "He Lives". The grand finale was the Rock gospel song "My Redeemer Lives" sung by the LAMPstand Rock Band and 20 young children. The musical was directed by young automobile engineer Tina Samuel, with simple but creative and impactful props and period costumes.

The musical also witnessed the launch of "Come India Sing A Gospel Song", a new category of the nation-wide talent contest and audition "Come India Sing" with the singing of the famous gospel song "Amazing Grace" by Aditi Iyer and Mozart’s "Hallelujah" by Serene Yoneko. This category will encourage aspiring Indians who wish to showcase their talent and aspire to be launched on a global platform. Some of the world’s greatest pop artists and Grammy Award winners like Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and many others either won their first Grammy Award or launched their singing careers by singing a gospel song.

The story of Jesus distributing bread and fish, his Last Supper with the 12 disciples and the encounter with the prostitute in the village square is usually told in church gatherings, school assemblies, story-telling classes and sometimes through musicals and plays. On the eve of this Easter, however, one musical company decided to tell some of these oft-told tales through the medium of Bharatanatyam.

“Our musical titled ‘An Easter Tale’ had Bharatanatyam performers Monica and Heera depicting scenes from the life of Jesus through the dance form. Apart from this, our cast of 30 participated in the musical. The story and significance of Good Friday and Easter were told through an interesting dialogue between mother “Becca” and her daughter “Karen” in modern day India,” said Aubrey Aloysius, founder of the Lorraine Music Academy, which staged the musical in Gurgaon this Easter.

It is often said that art is a universal language that can transcend boundaries of all kinds. The National Patriotic Project, begun in August last year, has taken to translating this adage into an inspiring series of musical evenings held on select national occasions.

On April 19, Gurgaon’s Epicentre auditorium will be host to ‘An Easter Tale’, a musical drama presented by the faculty and students of the Lorraine Music Academy and directed by Tina Samuel.

“India is a land of festivals, with a festival almost every month. In keeping with this we’ve designed a format where we have a concert every month as well. We had ‘Come India Sing A Festive Song’ celebrating Holi in March and now for Easter in April we thought we would incorporate something that not only India but a larger global community celebrates,” says Aubrey Aloysius, founder of Lorraine Music Academy and the LAMP Trust and Chairman of the National Patriotic Project.

One of the highlights of the evening will be a Bharatanatyam performance depicting the scenes from Jesus’ life leading up to Easter Sunday. On this unusual marriage of subject and form, he elaborates, “Our intention is to promote music, art and culture in India as well as to infuse Indian art forms in everything we do. Bharatanatyam is also a language with which stories are told, and that is exactly what we’re doing here. We’re using it to tell a story that transcends boundaries and I think that makes for a beautiful combination.” For those who enjoy Contemporary as a dance form, some other scenes from the Easter story will also be performed in that style.
